Combination, or Combi, boilers are mains-fed, which makes them most suitable for homes or properties where both the hot and cold water requirements are limited to 1 or 2 bathrooms and a kitchen. Combi boilers work by instantly heating water from the mains, as soon as the tap is turned on, making them highly efficient, and eliminating the need for a separate water cylinder or tank.
Combi boilers are the most common boiler type in the UK, with over 70% of UK homes utilising one for the heart of their central heating system. Combi boilers can operate using different fuels, and are genuinely easy to install, making them a cheaper and more economical option for most households.
Often found in older properties, conventional boiler systems utilise hot and cold water cylinders, or tanks, usually installed in a property’s loft, in order to provide hot and cold water to the household. Conventional boilers work by feeding mains water into a copper cylinder which heats a reservoir of water for use, whilst a cold water storage tank feeds outputs such as the kitchen sink. Due to the constant supply of water within the tank and cylinder system, conventional boilers do not suffer from the ‘pressure drops’ that can adversely affect combi boilers. However, this option of boiler can require much more physical space, due to the tanks and cylinder, making the new combi boilers a much more popular choice for most homeowners.
System boilers, fundamentally, work in the same way as conventional boilers do. However, with a system boiler, a storage tank is not required. Instead, hot water is pumped to both radiators, and a hot water unvented storage cylinder, which heats the mains fed water. The unvented cylinder is mains fed, making the pressure at the hot tap similar to the mains cold. The major advantage of installing a system boiler is the space saving that can be achieved by not having additional storage tanks in a property’s loft, and also the much greater flow rate at the hot tap.
