There’s a lot to think about when choosing a toilet: water efficiency, durability, comfort and accessibility. Often when you’re trying to find a toilet to fit your space, it is easy to forget to find one that fits you, too. At Copper, our range of accessible toilets are designed with function, comfort and style in mind.
First and fore mostly, disabled toilets do not exist. A toilet designed for the use of a disabled person, or a person with low levels of mobility is known as an ‘accessible toilet’. For a toilet to be disabled, it would in fact need to be experiencing some kind of inequality, physical disadvantage or emotional or mental barrier; which is of course, nonsense.
On the other hand, the purpose of an accessible toilet is to enable any person with a disability or reduced mobility to safely and effectively access a toilet facility. In order to remove the disabling barriers and restrictions presented to certain groups of people by standard toilets, accessible toilets may differ in terms of layout, available space, lighting, equipment, flooring, etc.
There are certain requirements that, by law, must be adhered to when fitting an accessible toilet into a public space or venue. For example, the compulsory minimum space requirement for an accessible toilet space is 220cm x 150cm; dimensions larger than these, will of course, give wheelchair users a larger turning circle and greater levels of comfort when using the facility. However, with larger dimensions, the key fixtures must still be correctly located, proportionally.
