When there’s a gas emergency, we are only a phone call away. Just like any other emergency service, our team work around the clock to ensure that if there’s an incident, it’s dealt with quickly, calmly and safely.

If you think you suspect a gas leak, or can small gas in you property, the first thing you must do is turn off your gas supply at the meter. There are two simply steps to follow to complete this action.

1. Ensure you know where your emergency control valve is, should an emergency arise. In most newer built properties, the control valve is located outside, alongside the gas meter, in a meter box. However, in older properties, the control valve may be located under the stairs, beneath the kitchen sink or perhaps in a garage space.
2. If your emergency control valve is in a cellar or basement, do not enter. Evacuate the building and call for help.
3. If your emergency control valve is safe to access, turn the handle on the emergency valve so that the lever is at 90° to the upright gas pipe.

1. Extinguish all naked flames and do not smoke.
2. Open all doors and windows to let gas out, and fresh air in.
3. Do not operate any mains power or light switches, do not switch anything electrical on, or off.
4. If you have any electrical security entry phones or locks, do not use them. Open all doors manually.

Smell Gas?

Did you know that the gas used to power appliances in our homes is actually completely odourless? Gas suppliers add a pungent, yet harmless gas called mercaptan, to their gas supplies in order to make gas leaks more detectable. The addition of mercaptan is what gives the gas its instantly recognisable smell, which some people liken to rotten eggs or old socks; and the decision to do this, has certainly saved many lives over the years.

The Dangers

According to the Gas Safe register, up to 25 families in the UK are in ‘immediate danger’ from a gas-related incident at any one time. Poorly installed, faulty, or old gas appliances are the most common cause for a leak, and if you think you can smell gas in your home, it is important to take action right away. Gas leaks are dangerous because they can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, alongside fires and explosions, if left unchecked.

Gas leaks in your home or business premises can be easily missed if you are not aware of how to spot them; and the consequences of an undetected leak can be devastating, if not fatal. Being alert to the signs that accompany a gas leak will hopefully enable all future problems to be resolved quickly and safely.
