Do you know where your stop tap is? In most homes the stop tap is located beneath the kitchen sink, however it may be found in an airing cupboard or by the front door; locations can vary. In the event of an emergency, knowing the location of your stop tap can significantly reduce the potential damage to your home or building.
You should be able to operate the stop tap yourself. By turning the valve clockwise, water is prevented from passing through, and it may take a few minutes for the water supply to your home to be completely turned off. To turn your water supply back on, simply turn the valve anti-clockwise. It is important to operate all stop taps slowly, if you over tighten or use excessive force the stop tap can become easily damaged or faulty.
